What to Ask

I’ve noticed that you haven’t been yourself like [give a specific example of a time or place] do you want to talk about it?

3

What to Ask

Hey, I haven’t heard from you or seen you for a while, are you ok?

4-1

What to Ask

Hey mate, I noticed your last post on facebook and I am a bit worried about you. Do you want to have a chat?

What to Ask

I can see this is worrying for you, is it just so tough that you feel like giving up?

What to Ask

Are things so bad that you’ve thought about hurting yourself or ending your life?

What to Ask

Sometimes when people talk about the feelings/situations you’ve been describing, they’re thinking about suicide. Are you thinking this way?

What to Ask

The things that you’ve been saying make me wonder if you’re thinking about taking your own life.

What to Ask

Sometimes when things are really hard going emotionally, people think about ending it all. Has this crossed your mind?

What to Ask

This may seem out of the blue, but are you having thoughts about hurting yourself?

What to Ask

Do you wish you could just go to bed and not wake up in the morning?

What to Ask

When you are thinking about this, what thoughts are going through your head?

What to Ask

This must all be so hard, so crap. Can I come over? Can we talk?

What to Ask

On a scale from one to ten how are you feeling right now?

What to Ask

When did you first have thoughts like this? Have you felt this way before?

What to Ask

What kinds of thoughts have you been having?

What to Ask

Have things gotten so bad that you’ve thought about hurting yourself or ending your life?

What to Ask

This is really hard for you, but we can get through this, I am here for you. Let’s work through this together

2-1

What to Ask

It worries me to think of you feeling so bad about yourself. I wish I could help you feel better – I want to help you as much as I can

3-1

What to Say

I may not know how you feel, but I do want to help you get through this.

1

What to Say

I can’t imagine how painful this is for you, but I would like to try and understand.

2

What to Say

You don’t have to feel this way. I’m here for you.

5

What to Say

Just stop, have faith that we can get through this.

7

What to Say

When you want to give up, tell yourself you will hold off for just one more day, hour, minute—whatever you can handle

8

What to Say

You may not believe it now, but the way you’re feeling will change

6

What to Say

Treating suicidal thoughts is like having a medical problem. For example if you’ve got mild asthma symptoms, you’d just treat yourself. BUT if it’s a life threatening attack, you’d ask the experts for help. Then you can go back to to living your life once we’ve sorted the crisis.

What to Say

I care about you and I would be so devastated if you weren’t here anymore

What to Say

Depression and despair make your brain tell you wrong thoughts, like it will never get better, there is no way out. Believe me there is.

What to Say

People who get better say they can’t believe the thoughts they were having now that they are well

What to Say

With help, your brain will stop telling you all this negative horrible stuff. You won’t have these thoughts when you’re well. Hang in there.

What to Say

Your brain is telling you things no one else will understand, it is saying negative wrong stuff. This can be corrected.

What to Say

That’s what depression is, everything is negative! But please remember back when things were not this bad, when it all wasn’t so dark. It will get better again.

What to Say

I know you think no one has ever experienced this pain and that no one can help but you WILL get better.

What to Say

I won’t ever get over it, and neither will anyone else that you care for, if you take your own life.

What to Say

What you are thinking is wrong. People who get better say they can’t believe the thoughts they were having when they were unwell

9

Geting Help

Have you talked to anyone outside me about this? It would be really good if you could speak to your GP.

4-2

Geting Help

Lots of people get suicidal thoughts when at a really low point. It doesn’t mean you’ll act on it. We do need to get you some help

Geting Help

I understand if you don’t want to talk to me about this. I can find someone that you can talk to who will help you.

Getting Help

This feeling will only get worse if left untreated. Can we ask your GP or a mental health service? I can help if it is too hard?

Geting Help

Will you promise me that you won’t harm yourself or do anything like act on those awful thoughts? Please.

Getting Help

You can get through tonight, but if you feel you can’t, please let me know. I will call you.

11

Geting Help

This awful pain will stop. We need to talk so I can help you get help.

12

Getting Help

Doctors tell me this is something they can help fix . No matter how bad.

Getting Help

Mate, I’ll never get over you not being here. Please talk.
